Burglar NOT Killed By Homeowner

02 November 2015, Lake Dunlap, Texas

Guadalupe County Officials are confirming that a homeowner shot an intruder around 5 this morning and suspect that this may bring a string of robberies to an end.

According to Sgt. Zachary McBride of Guadalupe County, the homeowner awoke to a noise and reported a potential burglary in progress. Then he and the burglar met and the Good Guy With A Gun shot the intruder causing serious, but non-fatal, wounds.

There are few details as to the how and why, but police suspect that, given the similar methodologies used by this burglar, that he may be responsible for a string of burglaries.

What we can learn from this?

This man did just about everything right. He heard the noise, called the police, and that’s where the facts end. If he went in search of the intruder, we would say that he was perhaps a bit hasty in his zeal to defend his home. If the burglar came to him, then perhaps he should have invested in a stronger bedroom or hallway door, depending on where he has established his safe area.

We just don’t know.

We also don’t know the police response time. How long after the fact did the police arrive?

We’re not speaking ill of the police, but in a spread out area such as Central Texas, especially after the rains we’ve had, police response times are slowed down. And they’re not that fast to begin with.

Short of the establishment of the Department of Pre-Crime, police can never have the response time we want without instituting Orwellian surveillance.

Therefore, this homeowner was forced to Be His Own First Responder. He encountered the problem and he dealt with the problem in an independent fashion. He did not bury his head in the sand and hide, hoping that the intruder would leave him alone.
